The Republic of Bashkortostan also known as Bashkiria is a federal subject of Russia (a republic). It is located between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains. Its capital is the city of Ufa.
The state has strong ties with its neighbor Tatarstan. "Bashkortostan" derives from the name of the Bashkir ethnic group and the Persian suffix -stan (an ending common to many Eurasian countries).
